Do I have to be a New York resident to get a NY medical card?
Yes, New York State requires you to provide proof of residency within the state when registering as a patient.
Proof of residency can include:
ID number from your New York State Driver’s License or New York State Non-Driver ID Card.
Copy of a government-issued identification card that contains your name and New York State address.
Copy of a utility bill or other document showing your residency issued within the previous two months. The document must contain your name and address.
Copy of a current lease or similar document showing your residency within New York State.
Other documentation as approved by DOH containing sufficient information to show proof of residency in New York State.
What is the first step to obtaining medical marijuana?
The first step is speaking with a treating Medical Marijuana practitioner about whether the medical use of marijuana is appropriate for your condition. If your practitioner determines it is an appropriate treatment for you and he or she may issue you a certification for medical marijuana.
How can I find a registered practitioner?

iCannaMed.com is an online-only service. We have our headquarters located in Manhattan, however, we do not meet with patients at our physical location.

Will I need to provide medical documentation showing proof of my qualifying condition?
Yes and No. We require medical records to support your diagnosis for almost all of the Approved Conditions, except some cases of Chronic Pain. In these cases, it is up to the Medical Practitioner's discretion to diagnose the patient for Chronic Pain using the patient's self-reporting of medical history and current symptoms.
You may submit any medical record, letter, or test results showing the diagnosis of an Approved Condition. If you do not have supporting medical records, please download the Medical Records Release Form, complete the information highlighted in yellow, and provide to your doctor or other health care provider so they can fax your medical records to us at (347) 230-5453.
What do I do after I receive my MMJ Certification?
Once you have completed your online consultation, the MMJ practitioner will issue to you a medical marijuana recommendation in certificate form that is valid for 1 year. You must then register with the Medical Marijuana program through the NYS Health Department's online Patient Registration system. After your registration is processed, you will be issued a Registry Identification Card. You will receive instructions on how to register through the Patient Registration system along with your MMJ Certificate.
How long is my NY Certification valid?
Each certification issued is valid for only 1 year. Patients wishing to keep and renew their MMJ Card must have a consultation with an MMJ Practitioner every year.
Which dispensing facilities may I use?
After you receive your Medical Marijuana Card from NYS, you may purchase medical marijuana products from any registered dispensing facility in New York State. Click here for a list of Dispensing Facilities in NY.
How much medical marijuana can I get at a time?
Registered Organizations may dispense up to a 30-day supply of medical marijuana to a certified patient or designated caregiver, pursuant to any recommendations or limitations made by the practitioner on the certification.
